What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Analytics

We do not employ analytics. We do collect statistics for administrative purposes.

Contact Form Submissions

If you submit a contact form, we will ask for personal information — such as name and email address — so that we can respond. We use the Akismet anti-spam service, which captures the the submitter’s IP address, user agent, and referrer. We do not store any of this information or use it for any other purpose.

Cookies

Visiting the login page sets a temporary cookie that aids compatibility with some alternate login methods. This cookie contains no personal data and expires after 1 hour. If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Infinite Scroll

In order to record News page views with additional loads, the following information is used: IP address, WordPress.com user ID (if logged in), WordPress.com username (if logged in), user agent, visiting URL, referring URL, timestamp of event, browser language, country code. Page views will be tracked with each additional load (i.e., when you scroll down to the bottom of the page and a new set of posts loads automatically).

Logins

An IP address will be collected and anonymized before storing it to the database. Additional data such as login time and number of logins will be stored for analytical and security reasons.

Mobile Theme

A cookie (akm_mobile) is stored for 3.5 days to remember if you wish to view the mobile version of this site.

News Page Subscriptions

If you subscribe to News Page notifications, we store your email address for this purpose. Your email address is deleted from the notification list automatically if you unsubscribe. Note that only an email address is required to subscribe, no other information is requested or collected.

Security Logs

The IP addresses of visitors, user IDs of logged in users, and usernames of login attempts are conditionally logged to check for malicious activity and to protect the site from specific kinds of attacks. Examples of conditions when logging occurs include login attempts, log out requests, requests for suspicious URLs, changes to site content, and password updates. This information is retained for up to 30 days.

Who we share your data with

We do not share any personal data with anyone. This site is scanned for potential malware and vulnerabilities by Sucuri’s SiteCheck. We do not send personal information to Sucuri. However, Sucuri could find personal information posted publicly (such as in comments) during their scan. For more details, please see Sucuri’s privacy policy.

How long we retain your data

For users that register on our website, we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information. Subscriber information is retained in the local database indefinitely for analytic purposes and for future export. Data is retained until requested or the user has been deleted.

Security logs are retained for up to 30 days.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where we send your data

All data are stored on a hosting service in the USA. Contact form submissions may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

This site is part of a network of sites that protect against distributed brute force attacks. To enable this protection, the IP addresses of visitors attempting to log into the site are shared with a service provided by ithemes.com.
